Kids' iPad buying guide

iPad 7, 8 or 9

  • iPad 9: A13 chip and a 12MP front camera with Center Stage. Runs iPadOS 26 and will get updates the longest.
  • iPad 8: A12 chip, also runs iPadOS 26, for less.
  • iPad 7: the lowest price. It stops at iPadOS 18, which is fine for videos, games and reading apps.

All three have the same 10.2-inch screen and home button with Touch ID, and work with Apple Pencil (1st gen).

Making it kid-ready

Set up Screen Time to limit hours and block apps, and turn on Ask to Buy through Family Sharing so you approve every download. Add a sturdy case. If it does get dropped, the 1-year warranty covers accidental damage like a cracked screen.

What the grades mean

Excellent, Good and Fair only differ in how the outside looks. Every grade passes the same tests, has battery health of 80% or higher and gets the same warranty. For a kid's iPad that will live in a case, Fair is usually the smart buy.
