Who it's for
Good for
- Travel and writing: about 2 lb
- Retina screen in a tiny, fanless body
- Secondary laptop for notes and web
Not for
- Anything demanding (the 2015 Core M is the slowest 12-inch)
- Apps that need macOS 12 or later (tops out at Big Sur)
- Multiple ports (one USB-C)
Our verdict
The original 12-inch MacBook: light, silent and still a lovely screen. Fine for writing and browsing, but it's the oldest and slowest; the 2017 model gets two more macOS versions.
