Refurbished MacBooks buying guide

Apple silicon or Intel

MacBooks with Apple silicon (M1 and newer, from late 2020) are faster, run cooler and last much longer on a charge. Intel models from 2015 to 2020 cost less and are fine for browsing, email and documents, but Apple has said macOS Tahoe (26) is the last version for Intel Macs, and many older Intel models stop earlier, at macOS Monterey or Ventura.

Which MacBook

  • MacBook Air: light and silent. The Apple silicon models have no fan, and from the M2 on there's a 15-inch size.
  • 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021 on): brighter screens, HDMI, an SD card slot and more power for photo and video work.
  • 12-inch MacBook: the lightest Mac we sell, with one USB-C port. Good for writing and the web.
  • 2015 MacBook Pro: USB-A, HDMI, an SD card slot and MagSafe 2 all built in.

What the grades mean

Excellent, Good and Fair only differ in how the outside looks. Every grade passes the same tests, has battery health of 80% or higher and gets the same 1-year warranty, which also covers accidental damage like a cracked screen or a drop.
